NEW TECHNOLOGY to prohibit the spread of offensive and inappropriate material through mobile phones must be implemented as soon as possible, Oireachtas Communications Committee chairman Noel O’Flynn said last night.

However, following a meeting with mobile phone operators yesterday, Noel O'Flynn said he had been informed by Vodafone, O2 and Meteor there was not yet any available technology capable of monitoring and cutting out abusive material such as child pornography.

"To do nothing would be to say we have no interest in the problem. Certainly the whole area of camera phones can be abused and misused and we are anxious to stop that," he said.
