THE British Government embarked yesterday on a search for ways to help the North face up to its past.

With ministers facing demands for a truth and reconciliation mechanism to get to the bottom of unsolved murders, Secretary of State Paul Murphy said there needed to be a way of dealing with the pain and hurt of the Troubles.

But in a written statement to MPs, he admitted there were no easy answers.
