Gaybo to pack a punch with heavyweights

Gay Byrne returns to the spotlight on the stage of the National Concert Hall next month when he conducts the first of three interviews with some of the world’s top personalities, including former boxing champion George Foreman.

But first up will be an interview with legendary broadcaster Sir David Frost on October l. Gaybo then gets to square up to Foreman on November 8 before he makes space for astronaut Buzz Aldrin on November 18.

The interviews last for more than an hour before the audience get the opportunity to quiz guests.

Just as he did his homework prior to Late Late Show interviews for 40 years he will be resorting to a lot of background detail before meeting some of the biggest names on the world’s stage.

He said there were no plans to televise the interviews but they might possibly go out on radio.

Despite his retirement Gaybo has had a busy year outside of his Donegal retreat - firstly with a 40th wedding anniversary last June followed by his 70th birthday party, which lasted for about three days in Donegal. Also his daughter Crona will be married on September 28 while his wife Kathleen celebrates her 70th birthday in October.

Sir David Frost is acknowledged as one of the best known television interviewers in the world and next month’s interview is likely to prove an engaging one between two veterans.

The November 8 interview with George Foreman marks the 30th anniversary of one of the greatest sporting events of all time - the famous “Rumble in the Jungle” when Foreman was defeated by Muhammad Ali in Zaire.

Eagle Star marketing manager Fionnuala Reilly said they were delighted to be sponsoring the interviews for a second year.

Tickets are selling at the National Concert Hall at prices of €35, €50 and €70.
