O’Dea announces €33.5m in barracks upgrades

On a visit to Sarsfield Barracks in Limerick, Mr O’Dea said the money would help continue investment in the defence forces.

He said that €3.5m of the new allocation will be spent to refurbish buildings and carry out other work at Sarsfield Barracks during 2005.

The allocation of the other €30m will be announced to different barracks around the country as he visits them.

Mr O’Dea said: “So far this year I have signed contracts for the purchase of six new helicopters valued at €60m. Later this year, the department will commence the process of inviting tenders for the supply of light tactical vehicles as the military authorities have identified the acquisition of these as a key priority.”

He said he was particularly pleased that a considerable portion of this year’s upgrade budget is being spent on improvements at Sarsfield Barracks.

The new facilities to be provided will include a privates’ club.

The minister said that since his appointment last September he had been deeply impressed on each visit to defence forces locations around the country.

“At each and every one of these I have been most impressed by the commitment and professionalism of our military personnel across all ranks. Today, here in Sarsfield Barracks, is no exception.”

He praised the peacekeeping work being carried out by Irish troops serving abroad with the UN.

“Both Sarsfield Barracks and the members of the 12th Infantry Battalion are an immense source of pride to the people of Limerick and I am most pleased to be here, both as minister and local representative, to acknowledge your contribution to the life of Limerick. Throughout the city’s history, the military has been a major influence on the economy of the region.”

He said the ongoing maintenance and upgrading of Sarsfield Barracks has led to a major improvement in the facility and its environs.

He said: “I should also mention the excellent work that has been ongoing at Sarsfield Barracks. Recently I was contacted by Limerick Civic Trust who praised the work that had been done at the barracks, particularly along the Edward Street section.”
