New treatments likely after asthma discovery

A GENETIC key to asthma has been discovered which could lead to new methods of diagnosis and treatment.

Scientists looked at 460 pairs of siblings in Britain and the United States, performing entire scans of their genetic make-up.

The defective gene called ADAM33 was found to be related to the development of ‘over-responsive airways’ that are characteristic of asthma.
