Irish Film Board planning more low budget movies

BORD Scannán na hE´ireann is planning low budget films, it said last night after British movie firm FilmFour announced it was scaling back because it could no longer compete with Hollywood.

Chief executive Rod Stoneman said they would take the opposite approach to the firm behind hits such as Trainspotting and The Crying Game.

Mr Stoneman, who has been with the Irish Film Board for eight years, said: "We're going in exactly the opposite direction to FilmFour and doing more low budget films that we can do under our own steam." Channel 4's board is discussing its subsidiary firm's future which is expected to end efforts to rival Hollywood productions.
