AER LINGUS were yesterday forced to cancel a number of transatlantic flights as snow storms cripple the north east of the United States.

Aer Lingus flight EI 133 from Dublin and Shannon to Boston, where Logan Airport was forced to close down, was cancelled and flight EI 132 from Boston last night was also cancelled. Customers were advised to call Aer Lingus reservations to make alternative travel arrangements.

The storms have claimed the lives of 10 people so far.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said it will cost about $1 billion to remove just one inch of snow from New York streets.

However, he said the city had 212,000 tonnes of salt ready to sweep the streets, and hundreds of snow ploughs were being put to work.

Paddy Power Bookmakers are meanwhile offering odds of 6/1 for a snowfall to be registered at Dublin Airport on Christmas Day, and odds of 20/1 on an inch of snow being recorded.

However, there is little prospect of snow here over the coming days .

Met Eireann are predicting that showery outbreaks of rain in the south this evening will spread northwards across the country tonight.

There’ll be further showers tomorrow. Wednesday will be mild and windy with heavy rain. Another spell of mild, wet and fairly windy weather is expected on Thursday.
