Blaze victim, six, tried to escape flames in wardrobe
He hid in a wardrobe in the mobile home, trying to hide from the blaze.
His father, Thomas, made repeated attempts to find his son, but was beaten back by flames.
The boy’s mother, Elizabeth, managed to get out with their two other children, a boy aged five, and a six-month-old baby. The mobile home was located at Clondrina off the dual carriageway on the main Ennis/Shannon road.
The fire started at about 10.30am and two units of Limerick Fire Brigade rushed to the scene, but the fire had taken hold by the time they arrived.
It is believed the fire started accidentally and gardaí have carried out a forensic examination at the scene.
The body was removed to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital where a post-mortem examination was carried out yesterday.
The boy’s father was treated for injuries at the same hospital.
There are 10 families living at the Clondrina halting site.
Counselling has been offered to the bereaved family and other families who witnessed the tragedy.
Thomas’s remains will be brought from Cross’s Funeral Home, Gerald Griffin Street, to Christ the King Church, Caherdavin, today at 3pm.
The funeral will take place to Craughaun cemetery tomorrow after 11am Mass.
