Young scientists exhibit final touches to showcase projects

WHILE most of the country had their feet up over the past week, hundreds of students from both sides of the Border have been busy finalising projects for next month’s Esat BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition.

From a record number of entries, over 480 projects have been selected to go on display at the RDS in Dublin. The exhibition begins for participants on Tuesday, January 11, and will be open to the public from January 13 to 15.

While exhibitors will be nervously hoping to do well, the public can enjoy a series of added attractions at this year’s event.

Among these will be the In Search of the Dinosaur area, featuring an almost life-size Tyrannosaurus Rex which growls and moves like the real thing.

The 2005 exhibition will also host a battle of robotic technology, as Robot Wars competitors vie for the Young Scientists Challenge Shield. Budding entrants can even learn how to build their own robot at workshops running for the week at the RDS.

A play called Albert Einstein Meets Doctor Who has been written especially for the event and will be performed for the public, while Weapons of Sound will demonstrate how to make music out of anything recyclable.

Matching the feat of last year’s winner Ronan Larkin, a student of CBS Synge Street in Dublin, will be the ambition of many of those currently putting finishing touches to their work. The judges described his project, on generalised continued fractions, as a superbly-presented development of new techniques for solving difficult equations of mathematics.

The exhibition judges will also award prizes for groups and individuals in the categories of chemical, physical and mathematical sciences; biological and ecological sciences; technology, and social and behavioural sciences.

Esat BT and BT Northern Ireland chief executive Bill Murphy said the exhibition “presents an excellent opportunity for students to display innovation, creativity and exceptional ability.”

“This year, we are also delighted to introduce everyone at the RDS to broadband from Esat BT, which will form an important part of education in the future,” he said.
