UNIVERSITY of Limerick president Roger Downer yesterday warned that vital research would suffer if the Government continued to slash third level college budgets.

Mr Downer believes that research is central to our economic growth because most of the multi-national companies based here depend on it to maintain competitiveness.

"The Celtic Tiger was built on the high research levels of our graduates and we are shooting ourselves in the foot by cutting back on this funding," Mr Downer said.
