The victim, in his 50s, was jumped by two young men in a lane-way in Dublin city on Sunday night.

He received serious injuries in the assault and was brought to St James’s Hospital for treatment.

The incident occurred shortly after 9pm on Camden Place, a lane-way between Camden Street and Harcourt Street.

“The two attackers are believed to be in their early 20s, one was wearing a white top and the other a blue top,” said a garda spokesman.

He appealed to anyone who may have passed through Camden Place between 8pm and 10pm on Sunday to contact Harcourt Terrace Garda Station on 01 6669539 or 01 6669500.

In a separate incident, gardaí in Ashbourne, Co Meath, are appealing for witnesses in connection with an armed robbery yesterday morning.

A raider made off with a quantity of cash from a bookmakers on Main Street, Clonee, at around 10.45am.

“A lone male entered the premises wearing a motorcycle helmet and armed with a sawn-off shot gun. He threatened staff and left with a quantity of cash,” said a garda spokesman.

The gunman escaped in a stolen maroon 03 Kildare- registered Ford Focus car.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Ashbourne Garda Station at 01 8010600.

Meanwhile, detectives in west Dublin said it could be weeks before the result of a post-mortem on the body of a man is known.

The 31-year-old man was found near the Grand Canal bank at Killeen Road, Ballyfermot on Saturday.

Gardaí said there was no evidence to indicate the man had been attacked.
