Householders facing €200 charge over blocked drains
The controversial charge was criticised last night by Cllr Tom O’Driscoll.
A number of people have complained about the charge, he said.
“It’s an unfair burden on people who are expected to establish where the blockages might be,” he said.
But City Hall defended the move and said it will help streamline council operations.
“Our responsibility is for the main sewers only,” a spokesperson said.
“Problems with pipes between the householder’s drain and where it connects to the main sewer is the responsibility of the householder.”
People who contact the council about blocked drains were always asked if they had established first whether the problem was with the private pipe, he said.
