FORMER British police officers are to be recruited to assess the criminal investigation into solicitor Rosemary Nelson’s murder in Northern Ireland, it emerged yesterday.

As the public inquiry opened on a killing dogged by allegations that rogue security force members plotted with loyalist paramilitary assassins, chairman Michael Morland also pledged it would be totally independent.

Even though set up by Northern Ireland Secretary Paul Murphy and funded by the British Government, the hearing will probe for any wrongdoing on the part of the authorities.
