Gardaí treating death of man in Sligo as murder
Gardaí have named the man as Paul Waters from Avondale, Sligo, who was in his 40s.
State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy confirmed the man sustained numerous head injuries.
Inspector Liam Fletcher of Sligo Garda Station said the 42-year-old’s body was discovered in an alleyway off Stephen’s Street in the town centre at around 8.30am by a passerby on the way to work.
Gardaí said the man was known to them, but not in a criminal sense.
The alleyway links Stephen’s Street with a local car park and the area is a mixture of apartments and businesses.
Chief Staunton said he hoped to receive information from local residents, who might have heard or seen something.
Inspector Liam Fletcher said they were trying to establish Mr Waters’ last movements and check footage from any CCTV cameras in the area.
Meanwhile, family and friends of a missing 25-year-old non-national are today preparing for the burial of her remains.
Gardaí probing the identity of a decomposed body found in Kilkenny on Friday have confirmed the remains are those of Malawi woman, Paiche Onyemaechi.
The mother of two young children, aged 4 and 2, was reported missing by her Nigerian husband from their home at St Herblain Park in Waterford almost three weeks ago.
The deceased was a quiet woman, local reverend John Rochford said last night. “The entire asylum community is shocked by what has happened and they are fearful of further attacks. This tragedy has sent shockwaves through the community.”
