THIS time round, the world’s most famous passenger liner, the ill-fated Titanic, claimed no victims.

Titanic claims no victims this time

Ordinary level Junior Certificate students of St Augustine’s College in Dungarvan, Co Waterford, sailed through the question on the Titanic on the history paper, describing it as very fair and decent.

Overall, there was a hugely positive to the ordinary and higher-level history papers, and to date the exams are going very much according to plan for the Dungarvan students.

Craig O’Connor, one of more than 50 students sitting ordinary level, said he was very happy with it.

“The picture and document questions were also very doable, and the one about the Titanic I found to be particularly fair,” Craig said.

Likewise, Keith Collins considered the short questions offered a nice mix and, while a few of them were tricky, most were easy.

Another ordinary level history student Ciaran Mitchel found the picture and document questions to be the easiest.

“We were well prepared for many of the questions, several of them being repeats from last year,” Ciaran said.

The most glamorous race meeting of the year cross channel, Royal Ascot, could have proven to be a distraction for Noreen Queally of Ballinamult. But she had to shut it out of her mind to focus on the history exam.

Her first cousin, Tom Queally, of nearby Cappagh, who was the champion apprentice jockey a few years ago, had two rides at the famous meeting yesterday.

However, Noreen said all of her concentration was in the exam room, although she was still very anxious to hear how he had fared once the exam had ended.

She found the higher-level paper challenging but manageable, with what she described as ‘a few sticklers’ in the short question section.

She also said it was fortunate that a number of the questions were similar to those included in the paper last year and luckily students had prepared themselves for that possibility.
