Ryan accuses O’Donnell of ‘backstabbing FF’

Green Party transport spokesman Eamon Ryan, a constituency colleague of Ms O’Donnell in Dublin South, said the PD’s election manifesto was coming back to haunt them.

According to Ms O’Donnell, Fianna Fáil made too many promises during the election and now the Government was getting blamed and accused of breaking promises.

Making too many election promises went out of fashion with button-up boots and the PDs were more in tune with today’s more discerning voters and didn’t make as many commitments, Ms O’Donnell said.

Accusing Ms O’Donnell of being the Lady Macbeth of the PD party, Mr Ryan said her hands were stained by the conning of the electorate.

“Liz O’Donnell’s condemnation of Fianna Fáil for false election promises is a fine example of the black art of political backstabbing,” he said.

“Perhaps when you are ensconced on the high moral ground you don’t need to read or believe your own election manifesto.”

Listing off a ream of promises from the PD manifesto, Mr Ryan said they were all now broken.

The PDs promised to develop the Community Employment Programme. “Did they mean to cut it in half?” Mr Ryan said.

The PDs promised to ensure all primary school buildings will meet high national standards within three years. “Do they think that prefabs will do the job?” he said.

The PDs promised the LUAS will be completed by 2003, with three sections by 2006 and a Dublin Metro by 2007.

“They will have a chance to show their mettle when the spending decisions come to Cabinet next month,” Mr Ryan said.

The PDs promised to reopen rail routes, reintroduce passenger rail services and introduce commuter rail services.

“Why then, did they not raise their heads as one rail line after another got the chop last year?” he said.

The PDs promised to ensure no mass burn incinerator.

“Have they told the Minister for the Environment?” Mr Ryan said.
