THIS week, folks, we have a tale of two BMWs — two different cars that will appeal to different people, illustrating how manufacturers are reacting swiftly to changing customer demands.

The two cars are the 428i M Sport Coupe and 318d SE Grand Turismo. I fell in love with one and despised the other.

The two machines are closely related, despite BMW’s confusing nomenclature, and yet they are different in many regards — not least in price — and will appeal to different audiences.
