Authorities in Baltimore have appealed for calm after the first effort to convict an officer over the death of a man in a police van ended with a hung jury and a mistrial.

There are more African Americans on probation, parole or in prison in the US today than slaves in 1850. It is not a crisis of crime. It is a crisis of people being left behind.
