VETERANS of World War II marked the 65th anniversary of the Allies’ victory over Japan yesterday in a solemn ceremony attended by Prince Charles and British Prime Minister David Cameron.

POLITICIANS, military chiefs, relatives and hundreds of strangers bade farewell yesterday to Henry Allingham, the world’s oldest man and one of Britain’s last survivors of World War I.

The solemn silence of pre-dawn services gave way to booming marching bands and the clink of beer glasses today as Australians and New Zealanders marked their annual tribute to military veterans.

President McAleese will attend an ecumenical service of remembrance and reconciliation at St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin this afternoon to commemorate those who have died in wars.
