Half a million manufacturing jobs could be created if the British government and local authorities gave more contracts to UK firms rather than to foreign companies, the country’s biggest trade union said today.

Workers at a UK Cadbury factory which is set to close will stage a demonstration tomorrow as part of a campaign to save their jobs.

An investigation into possible breaches of food safety rules at a Cadbury plant is not due to wrap up until next month.
