Concern over EU sugar proposals

THE proposed reform of the EU sugar regime was worrying for the industry, according to Labour Party TD Joe Sherlock.

He called on Fianna Fáil TDs, if they are concerned about the issue, to seek a meeting with Agriculture Minister Joe Walsh.

Mr Sherlock said a reduction in the quota would result in job losses at Mallow Sugar Factory, where 250 people are employed. This reduction would also affect workers at the Rowntree factory in Mallow and the Cadbury plant in Rathmore.

“The proposal suggests compensation for the factories and beet farmers for some of the lost income, but no reference has been made for workers and their families,” he said.
