BISHOP Edward Daly’s call to end mandatory clerical celibacy to ease problems facing the Catholic Church (News, Sept. 13) echoes an ancient refrain in Ireland.

THE criticism by a number of Irish priests of the Vatican’s (ie, the Pope’s) response to the Murphy report and the ongoing revelations of a global clerical abuse cover-up is well stated (‘Priests criticise Vatican response to report fallout’, April 22).

I THINK the Irish Examiner should get the Pulitzer Prize for best headline and story (‘Hillary leaves pollsters in tears after shock victory in New Hampshire’ (January 10).

I CONSIDER myself to be extremely fortunate to have attended the launch of the new exhibition Whipping the Herring at the Crawford Art Gallery in Cork.

THE Tánaiste and Minister for Health Mary Harney is in good company in recognising the contraceptive needs for Irish girls (Irish Examiner, July 27).

FRANK O’CONNOR was scathingly critical of those who neglected Ireland’s heritage and of the educational system which leaves the Irish in such ignorance of their rich history.

READ with interest that the US and Irish governments believe Carol Coleman’s interview with George W Bush showed a lack of respect for the office of the president.

THE apology by the IRA for all the violence and death it caused over the past 30 years is indeed welcome news.
