European stocks slid to their lowest in nearly four months and sterling continued to fluctuate as investor jitters intensified ahead of Britain’s EU membership referendum next week.

Swiss stocks are not finding buyers, even after their declines this year pushed the cash reward for owning them to a record compared with government bonds.

European stocks posted their biggest two-day gain since October 2011 on increased investor confidence that central banks will act to support markets.
