Samsung Electronics will invest €16.3bn in South Korea to extend its lead in memory chips and next-generation smartphone displays. This will create half a million jobs.

Samsung yesterday forecast its best quarterly profit in three years, for the three months to the end of March, beating expectations. That has put it on track for record annual earnings, on the back of a memory chip super-cycle.

The head of Samsung has been arrested for an alleged role in a corruption scandal.
