Anyone assaulting a garda, hospital staff or members of the emergency services was at risk of a jail sentence, a judge warned yesterday as he sentenced a man to four months for such a crime.

An agitated man had to be pepper-sprayed by gardaí at the scene of a domestic incident after he repeatedly pounded his chest with his fist and then picked up a knife.
