The threat by a judge to visit a former waste transfer station had done more to have the site cleaned up than six years of court actions by the council and residents during which the defendant had “dragged his feet”.

One of the south-west’s major waste operators, which has been operating a large waste transfer and dry recycling plant without planning in a rural area near Listowel, Co Kerry, for seven years, narrowly avoided being jailed this weekend after he gave a sworn undertaking to shut the site.

A WASTE management contractor who has run a recycling business without planning permission for more than six years has given an undertaking to cease operations at the site in north Kerry by May 31.
