ONE of the most sacred shrines of Shia Islam was damaged during clashes between US forces and radical Shi’ite militiamen that killed at least 13 Iraqis, some of them civilians.

The three top Shiite Muslim clerics threatened by a mob in Iraq’s holy city of Najaf were safe today after they were rescued by tribal supporters, a cleric in Kuwait said.
