United were dealt a major blow before kick-off when keeper Edwin van der Sar pulled a calf muscle in the warm-up and was replaced by Tomasz Kuszczak with midfielder Chris Eagles being added to the bench.

United could reappear at Haydock later this month if the ground is soft following an encouraging run at Wincanton.
