A Belfast man was charged tonight with blackmail and membership of a proscribed organisation.

A man has been arrested after police foiled a major blackmailing racket in north Belfast, it emerged tonight.

Two men were appearing before Belfast magistrates today charged with extortion and collecting funds for terrorism.
