IRELAND will not escape the effects of the US economic downturn, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern admitted yesterday.

The Government appears to be preparing to restrict the availability of alcohol.

The Irish Medical Organisation is urging the Government to phase out alcohol licences in supermarkets, shops and petrol stations.

THERE are almost 4,300 off-licences in the country — with almost 650 premises opening in the last two years alone.
