More than 20 people have been killed and more than a million driven from their homes following Typhoon Hagupit, which struck the Philippines over the weekend.

Typhoon Hagupit knocked out power in coastal provinces, mowed down trees and sent more than 650,000 people into shelters as it roared through the Philippines, but lessons from last year’s disaster seem to have avoided mass deaths.

Aid workers have described deserted streets and scenes of destruction in the Philippines as a typhoon started to work its way across the country.

Typhoon Hagupit is on course to make landfall in the Eastern and Northern Samar provinces of The Philippines this evening.
