Students have been snapping up college places after almost 50,000 received an offer on a third-level course yesterday.

Third-level leaders have given assurances that the standards of students taking up teacher training courses remain high.

The publishers of school books have demanded a change in government policy on Vat on e-textbooks and said they were doing all they could to limit the costs borne by parents.
