Lighthouses to blaze a new trail along Wild Atlantic Way

For those who think the Wild Atlantic Way isn’t quite wild enough, the All-Island Lighthouse Trail might be just the thing.

Lighthouses to blaze a new trail along Wild Atlantic Way

Under the proposal, up to 20 lighthouses north and south will form part of the trail, and phase one involves five lighthouse stations in Antrim, Donegal, and Down.

A tender issued last week on the Government’s etenders website sought creative consultancy ITT services for the project.

Five lighthouses including St John’s Point Lighthouse, and Fanad Head Lighthouse in Co Donegal — are to be redeveloped under separate construction contracts.

As well as offering accommodation, those behind the project also want to provide onsite services for visitors and an online educational learning zone.

The plan is to market the trail internationally, in an effort to capitalise on the growing recognition of the Wild Atlantic Way.

Kevin O’Connor of Commissioners of Irish Lights said it was hoped the project would be ready by next May.
