Saturday with Georgie Crawford: Since I survived cancer every morning is a blessing
No.1 Bestselling author and podcast host Georgie Crawford encourages children to take part in the Specsavers Short Story Competition.
We will be up at 7am with baby Tahlie. Since I survived cancer every morning is a blessing. Every day is an opportunity to grow, learn and evolve and I try my best to do that as much as I can.
The baby will get in with us and my older daughter Pia will run down and get our labrador. During the week we are always on the go, so it’s lovely to have that moment on a Saturday morning.
We will head to the kitchen and the coffee machine will go on. Pia is usually colouring, reading or writing and Tahlie will be having toast.
Then it’s planning the day, getting the house in order, putting the washing on… Tahlie is one now and we are smitten with her. We waited so long for her to come along that Pia was ready and is such a great sister.
Usually, we have a run on a Saturday morning, so breakfast will be something like eggs, fruit, porridge, granola, yoghurt and lots of sourdough toast with coffee.
I love having structure - I like to know what I’m doing. Myself and Jamie have always had a weekend routine since we met ten years ago.
Saturday is my day to just be, to be grateful for what we’ve created and for those almost insignificant moments - the breakfast, the coffee, the walk - what I now call 5-star moments.
The simple joy of being alive I will never, ever take for granted.
Our mothers are an amazing help to us so we will get the kids ready and then we’ll usually be in Marley Park for 10am.
We started a run club in March because we had created training runs for the NY Half Marathon and have such an amazing community of people.
We all go for coffee afterwards - it’s a chance to connect and meet like-minded people. Pia is quite inspired by it - she’s running her first kids' marathon of 650 metres in Lake Garda next April.
It’s off to stage school with Pia. She has generally been quite shy but she loves it - she’s learning how to sing and act and it’s been so good for her confidence.
If I’m in season with The Good Glow, I’ll have an opportunity to sit in the car and wrap up a few things.
My Saturdays look quite different when I’m in season - I think it’s more of an on mindset.
I’ll be checking the podcast, uploading it, doing social media, making sure the videos are ready to post on Sunday…
I am definitely more on on those Saturdays so when I’m not in season I try my best to be very present with the girls.
Pia knows that I don’t have a Monday-to-Friday job and my husband Jamie is very hands-on so he’ll take the reins on a Saturday afternoon when I’m in season.
We’ll come home and eat lunch together. I love to go to a farmers market or to Cavistons in Sandycove.
Pia has a friend next door so she might hop through the fence to play while Jamie is outside doing a job in the garden.
I won’t eat my dinner until I’ve taken off my makeup and had a shower - I would shower four times a day if I could. I don’t feel I can fully chill out until I’ve washed off the day.
Jamie is the chef on Saturday nights. He’ll make a steak with veg and potatoes.
With a digital business we are always on our screens during the week so it’s lovely to dim the lights, turn on music and have a glass of red wine.
We are definitely an at-home couple - we are in that chapter of our lives.
Our weekends are all about family and friends. I always say these are ‘the good old days’ - we are in them right now.
We love making family style food for people - throwing big platters into the middle of the table - potatoes, salad, a joint of meat, nice red wine, a fire pit, a guitar…
If I wasn’t at home my ideal Saturday would be spent anywhere by the sea, eating outdoors - it doesn’t have to be fancy. There’s a little side-of-the-road pizza place near my mum’s place in Spain - we walk down there, have a pizza, a couple of beers, play Uno...
The kids go to bed at 7.30pm. There are no screens allowed in the bedroom. Pia usually falls asleep pretty quickly but she can stay up as long as she wants as long as she’s reading.
We love a good series. We saved up the episodes of The Perfect Couple for Saturdays and loved watching Jack Raynor and Eve Hewson in it - such incredible Irish talent.
I find the Calm app really helpful for helping me sleep. With everything I’ve been through including the cancer diagnosis, sometimes lying in silence can be difficult.
I have a stack of books at my bedside and love to read before I fall asleep. At the moment it’s Oprah’s What I Know for Sure, Carole Radziwill’s What Remains and Hal Elrod’s The Miracle Morning.
I’m normally exhausted so I’ll fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow.
