We’re in the last throes of summer, such that it was. But there’s still time to make summer memories before the kids go back to school. Across the country there’s lots happening this weekend – from workshops and book launches to vintage markets and a literary festival.

Saturday

Viking bead-making workshop

Cork Public Museum, 11am

As part of Heritage Week 2024, the School of Irish Archaeology is running a Viking bead-making workshop where kids can create their own necklaces and bracelets using polymer clay. The workshops are aimed at kids aged between six and 12. The event is free but you need to reserve your spot here.

Children’s book launch

Lexicon Library, Dun Laoghaire, 2-3.30pm 

Author Helen O’Sullivan is launching her book series called The Gollogans at the Lexicon Library in Dun Laoghaire with a free event that includes kids’ crafts and story-time. Children age 6-9 can immerse themselves in the world of the Gollogans and get their books signed on the day.

Sunday

Pop-up vintage market

Sea Church, Ballycotton, Cork, 12-4pm

Sea Church is playing host to a pop-up vintage market with Sally Kirby of Free Spirit Vintage packing the venue with clothing, jewellery and crafts on the day. Have a browse through the vintage bits and pieces in this picturesque venue with sea views. There’s a handy playground directly across the road to keep the kids occupied too.

Limerick Show

Limerick Racecourse, all day

Limerick’s family and agricultural festival takes place at Limerick Racecourse on Sunday. The annual event attracts 15,000 visitors, 1,000 competitors and 150 exhibitors every year. It’s a jam-packed day with everything from show jumping and cattle shows to art, craft and baking competitions and a pet dog parade. There’s also a free kid zone to keep the kids busy, live music and a fashion show. Tickets are €15 for adults and children under 16 go free. The programme for the day is here.

Pitch’d Festival

Cork, August 23 – September 1

The circus and street arts festival kicks off on 23rd August. It’s a week-long festival so there will be plenty of opportunities to get involved with events and workshops happening throughout the week, including a festival gala on 24th August in The Everyman. There’s also a free pop-up circus skills event on Douglas Street for all the family on 24th. The festival programme is available here.

Spike Island Literary Festival

This is the third year of the fledgling literary festival, which focuses on crime writing. Set on Spike Island, a former prison, it’s a popular festival featuring some of the biggest names in crime writing. This year authors including Jo Spain, Arlene Hunt, Sinéad Crowley, Neil Lancaster and former state pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy, who will all take part in author panels. There will also be an opportunity for aspiring writers to get real-world advice from a renowned literary agent. Find out more about the festival and book your tickets here.

Guinness Cork Jazz Festival

October 24-28

It might feel like a long way off but it’s always a good idea to get your tickets early, particularly for popular events. It’s a stellar line-up this year, and while tickets for headliner Gregory Porter are already sold out, there are still so many amazing performers to see including Buena Vista All Stars Presents – One Night in Havana, Kamasi Washington, Seum Kuti & Egypt 80 and Mary Coughlan. There will, of course, be plenty of other events happening around the city from music trails to pop-up events – it’s always a fun-packed weekend. Tickets are available here.
