Cork schoolgirl Mia Murphy was called up on stage at the Shania Twain concert in Dublin

Little Mia Murphy spent all week telling everyone who’d listen that she’d soon be meeting her hero, country singing star Shania Twain.

The eight-year-old loves to sing and dance and inherited her love for the Still The One singer from her mum.

“I’m always listening to Shania,” explains her mother, Trina Murphy. “Mia especially loves the songs with all the girl power messages like Queen of Me and Man, I feel like a Woman. She's always watching Shania clips on Instagram and TikTok and loves Shania's dogs."

The Canadian singer, who has sold over 100 million albums worldwide, was in Dublin to play two nights at the 3Arena as part of her Queen of Me tour.

But as the trip got closer, Trina tried to manage her daughter’s expectations.

“I was telling Mia things like how meetings with celebrities are usually prearranged, or aren’t actually real,” laughs Trina. "Of course, Mia proved me wrong."

The pair had travelled from their home in Cork for the show as a ‘girls trip’. Mia’s dad and brother had been to a Spurs match the weekend before.

Then, to everyone’s delight, the singer invited 8-year-old Mia up onto the stage.

“Mia had made an Irish/Canadian flag for Shania with a little letter and was waving it,” explains Trina. “Then Shania suddenly says, ‘there’s a little girl over here I have to meet’. She could see Mia singing away to all the songs,” Trina says. “Mia knows all her older songs too, and Shania had waved to her a couple of times before calling her up. It was absolutely amazing”.

The five-time Grammy Award winner hasn't played in Ireland since 2018. Wearing leopard skin leggings and her hair loose, she invited young Mia to accompany her on the main stage and got the crowd to sing Mia’s mum’s favourite song”.

“Shania asked who Mia was there with and she said me. So Shania asked me my favourite song and I told her it’s You’ve Got A Way because it’s my wedding song. So she sang a chorus of that.”

Meanwhile, Mia, who is in third class in Rathpeacon National School in Cork, has described the experience as “the best day of her life”.

“She’s absolutely buzzing,” says Trina. “She’s literally bouncing with excitement. According to her, she and Shania are besties now”.
