Una Healy is among the famous faces who have sent their support to Darren Kennedy after he revealed a man tried to mug him and his boyfriend “quite aggressively” in Dublin.

The TV presenter warned his followers to be careful after he was “aggressively approached” and threatened by a man while walking home in Dublin city on Monday night.

The Dublin native took to Instagram to share his experience of the attempted mugging while he was walking home with his boyfriend in the heart of the city at 11.30pm.

“Last night, as I was walking home with my boyfriend I was followed, and aggressively approached by a man who threatened me, and tried to take all my belongings in the heart of Dublin city,” he wrote alongside a video posted to his 85k followers.

In the video, Kennedy went on to explain that he crossed the street with his boyfriend when he realised that they were being followed by a man who then threatened to mug them “quite aggressively”.

“He looked like he was concealing his face…and looked like he had a knife or something underneath his T-shirt and he said: ‘Fags, give me all your money. Give me everything you have’ at which point, we were stunned,” he said.

“I told him to back off. We had an umbrella. I held the umbrella out and then he came towards us, and I said, ‘Let’s just run’ so we ran. Slightly terrified, I’m not going to lie.

He didn’t touch us, but it was very, very scary and I was shocked that this happened in Dublin city.

“Maybe I shouldn’t be but in this particular area, the streets that I was walking in, literally I have walked hundreds of times and have never had an ounce of trouble, never had an interaction with anyone, have been totally safe. [I] have always felt safe in Dublin city.”

The 42-year-old went on to explain that the incident occurred near St Patrick’s Cathedral, around 300 meters from “the biggest police station in the country”.

Friends and Irish stars sent support to Kennedy with The Saturdays singer Healy commenting: “Glad you are both ok! That’s shocking. So so scary. It’s good to raise awareness of this x.” Irish broadcaster Maia Dunphy also added: “Oh Darren, this is awful” while country singer Cliona Hagan wrote: “So sorry to hear this Darren! Glad you are both ok”.

Former US actor Eric Rutherford also said: “Very glad you’re both okay @darrenkennedyofficial” and former Union J member Josh Cuthbert commented: “Mate I am so sorry to hear this. Sending you lots of love. Why do people have to do this sort of stuff. It’s shocking.”

Kennedy said that the gardaí responded very quickly and were “excellent” and very reassuring. However, he went on to say that there is a need for more resources as well as greater visibility of gardaí and warned people to be careful.

“Monday night at half 11, I did not expect that to happen in Dublin city," he said.

Kennedy previously hosted #Trending on RTÉ 2 and has appeared on ITV’s This Morning for fashion segments.
