Tots to Teens: Teach young kids to cook 'grate' meals

Vogue Williams joins forces with Heinz and Barnardo’s to launch limited-edition ‘Heinz Meanz Mealz’ Beanz cans, available in supermarkets nationwide across the Republic of Ireland

Imagine how great it would be if your kids could whip up some simple meals. Jolene Cox doesn’t need to imagine. She has been teaching her 11-year-old daughter how to cook ever since Lily Mae was a toddler.

In 2019, the mother and daughter duo launched the Family Cooking Club, a weekly online cook-along show for children. They have now published Now You’re Cooking!, a cookbook aimed at kids aged five and older.

The book contains 70 tried and tested recipes ranging from mashed potatoes and egg-fried rice to spaghetti carbonara, meatballs, chicken curry, and sweet treats like cookie croissants.

The idea behind the book is to make cooking seem easy and fun for people of all ages.

  • Now You’re Cooking! is available for €30.

Beans for Barnardos

Heinz has reunited with Barnardos for the fourth year in a row to launch limited edition Heinz Meanz Mealz Beanz three-packs to raise funds for vulnerable families across Ireland.

For every three-pack sold in supermarkets nationwide, Heinz will donate to Barnardos breakfast clubs and family support programmes.

In the past four years, over one million Heinz Meanz Mealz cans have been sold, and the money donated has provided warm meals in Barnardos Early Years Centres across Ireland, as well as essential care parcels for families.

Heinz recently conducted a survey to understand how children in Ireland viewed family mealtimes. It found that 88% of people believe it’s important for families to eat together and take time to chat about their day. Yet it also found that 71% think family mealtimes are too rushed or disrupted, and 16% spend them using their phones or watching TV.

In response to these findings, Heinz and Barnardos teamed up with clinical psychologist Dr Malie Coyne to develop Heinz Beanz Cannection Kits. These kits include conversation starters and fun interactive games that families can play around the dining table.

A limited number of these kits is available to win.

We’re all more environmentally aware these days, which means many of us are ditching the likes of single-use clingfilm or tinfoil to wrap sandwiches for our children’s school lunches. These fun reusable sandwich bags from Nom Nom Kids are a great alternative.

They come in a pack of four and are available for €10.99 from thecoolfoodschool.ie. They are free from the worrying BPA, phthalates, and PVC that are found in many plastic products. Freezer and dishwasher-safe, they are easy for kids to open and for parents to clean.

Puppet-making workshop

Puppet artist Camille Pagniez is hosting a puppet-making workshop in Artisana on Winthrop Street in Cork City on Sunday, August 31. This beginner-friendly class will take place from 2pm to 4pm and it’s open to everyone from the age of four up.

The workshop can be adjusted to suit the age and abilities of each participant. This way, younger children can make something simple while adults can challenge themselves to create something more sophisticated.

  • Tickets for the workshop are on sale on www.eventbrite.ie and cost €25 for one or €40 for two.
