Tots to Teens: Origami and scrapbooking workshops this weekend

And a masterclass event to help parents help their anxious children
Tots to Teens: Origami and scrapbooking workshops this weekend

On Saturday, 11am to 12.30am, there will be an origami workshop in the Presentation Pastoral Centre in Doneraile, County Cork.

Childline by ISPCC has launched a new campaign to raise money for the children who need its support this summer. In a video, we meet Emily, a young girl who has set up a stall to hand out so-called Monster Spray to passersby. Her actions seem childishly innocent until it emerges that Emily knows the dangers posed by monsters all too well.

She’s giving the Monster Spray to others so they can use it to protect themselves against potential monsters in their lives.

The video highlights how the summer holidays can be fraught with fear for some children. Far from being a season of ice creams and sunny days on the beach, it can be a time of increased stress and anxiety when children lose the daily support they receive from friends and teachers during term time.

Childline is calling on us all to help. You can view the Monster Spray video here or donate at ispcc.ie

Swimsuits with sun protection

School is out for the summer, and families all over Ireland are planning trips to the beach, either at home or on sunnier beaches abroad. Wherever you intend for your family to soak up the sun this summer, your little ones will need suitable swimwear and hats to protect them from the sun.

These swimsuits from the Irish children’s brand wearegoose.ie could be just the thing. They come in various gender-neutral colours and are made from a breathable material that feels extra soft against the skin. Also, they block 97.5% of all harmful UVA and UVB rays, offering plenty of protection against the summer sun.

The swimsuits sell for €20 online, and the hats retail at €19.

Anxiety info event for parents

More and more of today’s children are struggling with anxiety. It can be hard for their parents to know what to do to help. An event that’s taking place at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Little Island in Cork on Sunday, June 30, aims to remedy this situation.

This masterclass event, which runs from 9.30am to 1.30pm, will be hosted by clinical and counselling psychologist Dr Jennifer Hayes. She has over twenty years of experience working with children and their families in the HSE and in private practice and currently heads up all psychology services in HSE social inclusion across Cork and Kerry.

Her approach is a relaxed and informal one. Instead of jargon, she promises clear information and easy-to-follow practical advice. Over the four hours, she will explain what anxiety is and how it presents in young children as well as what can trigger and exacerbate it. She will also outline the factors that help to protect against anxiety and that build resilience in children before sharing skills and strategies that you can use in helping your child manage their anxiety.

This is an adult-only event. Tickets are available from eventbrite.ie and cost €85 per person.
