Product Watch: The newest fragrance releases
“Sea air is mixed with the salty, mineral texture of sand and stones. A complex combination of wood and sea is in its essence. It provides the feeling of freedom and natural spirit,” says Master Perfumer Christine Nagel of Jo Malone’s new scent collection. Brand devotees should note that the super-authentic Wood, Sage and Sea Salt layers well with the Lime Basil & Mandarin and Nectarine Blossom & Honey colognes.
Jo Malone Wood, Sage and Sea Salt Cologne, €50 for 30ml, Body Crème, €65 for 175ml, Home Candle, €52 and Body & Hand Wash, €35 for 125ml. Available from September 1.
Armani’s sequel to 2013’s Sí perfume is a rich, charismatic version of the quixotic original. The cassis and black current notes are still there, ensconced between rose de Mai, neroli, fresh mandarin, bergamot and freesia. Patchouli, vanilla and woody notes make up the base.
No, you didn’t misread the price below. Chanel’s latest is an extremely decadent, heady fragrance. An extrait (or parfum) is perfume at its purest, most tenacious and most expensive. It is the espresso intenso to eau de parfum’s Americano and eau de toilette’s latte. Coco Noir Extrait includes top notes of grapefruit and bergamot that accentuate the rose and jasmine heart. Indonesian patchouli and sandalwood notes add warmth. Sold in a doll-size flacon with traditional stopper and a wax-effect seal, it makes an impact with a single dab.
Chanel Coco Noir Extrait/Parfum, €206 for 15ml and Coco Noir Body Cream, €77 for 150ml. Available from August 22.
“If you wish to bring a piece of summer everywhere you go, this is the perfume for you. It smells like sun, warm sand and a gentle breeze of sea air,” says Marija Aslimoska, co-founder of Dublin-based rare fragrance boutique Parfumarija. The Paris-trained perfumer loves Sel Marin for the “refreshing note of lemon, which fades to reveal an aquatic green note while vetiver, cedar and birch dry slowly in the sand and sea air. This is a very unisex fragrance, imagined for surfer boys (think Jacques Mayol in The Big Blue), or sun-kissed, natural beauties.”
“Carlos Benaïm [this perfume’s creator] was of the mind that magnolia is closer to an eau de cologne than to a classic flower,” says Marija Aslimoska, co-founder of Dublin-based rare fragrance boutique Parfumarija. “He magnified the hesperidic [citrus] aspect of the magnolia to enhance the ‘eau effect’ and to add a woody vibration that gives the scent depth and sensuality. The result includes fresh chypre animated by a sombre base to give it mystery.”
“Arquiste has somehow managed to bottle the smell of a tropical night spent drinking gin and tonics while wearing white and laughing with friends,” says Marija Aslimoska, co-founder of Dublin-based rare fragrance boutique Parfumarija. “Those really great summer moments we like to treasure, re-live and re-tell over and over.”
