Tried and tested
This lotion contains a great mix of antioxidants and skin-soothing ingredients from non-fragrant plant, fruit and maritime sources. This is alcohol and fragrance-free, making it safe for the psoriasis or eczema-prone.

MAC does not get enough credit for its fine skincare range. This Lightful Softening Lotion is the best toner I have ever tried. It suits all skin types, particularly normal to dry skin. Its formula contains a generous blend of antioxidants and repairing and soothing ingredients that calm skin and support the natural moisture barrier. Daily use of a broad-spectrum sun cream enhances the benefits.

This toner contains more saponin than apricot. Saponins are plant carbohydrates that in skincare are generally cleansing agents. They remain and can dry out skin after use because toners are not rinse-off. The formula contains quite a lot of fragrance too.

Sensitive Skin Lotion is an alcohol-free toner with some skin calming agents and hydrating ingredients. The formula is fragranced with a little rose extract, making it less than ideal for sensitive skin. This is a salon product. See pevonia.co.uk for stockists.

I have oft lamented The Body Shop’s habit of basing product lines around a lone nourishing ingredient when skin benefits from several at once so much more. However, a simpler formula would actually be preferable to what is on these wipes. Why apply so much fragrance to something designed for quick cleansing? The water and castor oil base will remove makeup well enough.

What brand better than MAC to create a great makeup wipe? These cloths quickly and effectively remove makeup thanks to a gentle cleanser and a couple of skin soothing ingredients. The pack is expensive but contains 100 professional-sized cloths and has a sturdy, protective lid. The tiny bit of fragrance may bother sensitive skin.

Jason’s pads are a very good buy for normal to dry skin. The water-glycerin base is found in most moisturisers. Sunflower extract, aloe, chamomile and cucumber are great added soothers. Alcohol is a very minor ingredient in these pads but sensitive types are still better off with a gentle, water-based cleanser.

Cleansing cloths are designed to be used without water and do leave traces of their contents on skin. This is potentially problematic in the case of Skyn Iceland’s cloths, which contain a generous amount of angelica root water. There is some research that shows this extract to be phytotoxic, meaning it can both irritate skin and increase sensitivity in sunlight.

This polish uses “Plasticizer Technology” to create fine but distinctly plump coats. I really like the Shellac-esque finish and broad colour range that Nails Inc offer. However, this polish loses points for poor endurance. No girl expects a gel polish to last as long as salon gels but at this price it should at least hit the 7-day mark.

This is a very good gel polish for the price. Hypergel creates a strong plumping effect and comes in a wide range of trend-inspired shades. Sadly, two coats did not last longer than three days without chipping.

Butter London makes your DIY manicure look professional with their appropriately-named “Top and Tails” set. This base and topcoat offer the most hard-wearing polish, maintaining a tough, shiny finish for a fortnight. They are expensive but still cheaper than all the pro gel manicures it can save you.

Good old No7 have created a hands-down winner. Two coats of this moderately-priced polish create a strong, glossy colour and well over a week without chipping.
