There used to be a time when the clothes marching down the catwalks decided the ‘It colour’ of the season.

Now however, thanks to Chanel’s beauty director Peter Phillips and his skill for creating remarkable nail varnish shades (who ever thought we would wear jade green!), it’s the tips of your fingers that hold all the power.

It’s only July and already the fash pack are talking about the next shades from Mr Phillips and the house of Chanel. But how to follow last year’s must-have ‘griege’ shade, ‘Particuliere’? Prepare to fall in love all over again with his Autumn Winter 2012 shades as Phillips takes griege to the next level.

When I first tried ‘Vertigo’ (pictured here), I initially thought it was purple at its heart. Then I thought I could sense a murky green deep down in its depths. Then perhaps a beige base. I finally settled on a pale black — is there even such a thing?

This new shade is as indefinable and elusive as the Hitchcock film after which it is named.

It is the colour of the turbulent dreams of a heavily hairsprayed head tossing around on a silk pillow. For a lighter alternative to ‘Vertigo’, the Grace Kelly to the Kim Novak, you’ll want to wear ‘Frenzy’.

This luminescent shade of light creamy beige is as ethereal as a passing rain shower.

No Hitchcock heroine would be complete without a go-to shade of red and ‘Suspicious’ provides a modern twist to a classic vamp red. They’re not in stores until August so all we can do for now is put our names on the waiting list — and covet. How very Hitchcockian of us!

BEAUTY CHART:OUR TOP FIVE PRODUCTS

Nimue cleanser (€39.20)

I love gel, foam or cream cleansers as splashing water on my face feels like I’ve really washed the day off. Dehydrated skin means I usually opt for cream cleansers but I’ve become a fan of this new soap-free gel from ‘cosmeceutical’ range, Nimue. The colour of custard but much smoother in consistency, vitamin E hydrates while the non-alkaline formulation maintains the skin’s natural PH balance. It worked on my stubborn waterproof eye make-up and left my skin glowing.

Le Teint Touche Éclat (€38)

Browsing around Brown Thomas a few weekends ago, you couldn’t get near the Yves Saint Laurent counter. And why? This little beauty. A Touche Éclat concealer pen sells every 10 seconds and it has been YSL’s hero product since it was first introduced 20 years ago. So a foundation by the same name was always going to be a hit. Le Teint Touche Eclat gives the same illuminating effect, just all over your face — what’s not to love?

Lancôme Hypnôse Star mascara €26

Lancôme’s mascaras are an old favourite of mine. My mother used them so they were my first introduction to glamorous eyelashes. Their latest product, the unabashedly glitzy Hypnôse Star mascara, takes inspiration from the cartoon character Betty Boop and her trademark eye lashes, but also from Hollywood’s 1930s Golden Age. The brush has two different lengths which coats and separates, while the formula contains soft waxes which continue the definition. It’s all about volume and effect so don’t expect to go unnoticed with this on your peepers.

The Perk Up Artist €34.50

With all this focus on the eyes, it’s important that the area around the eyes is in tip-top shape. Cleopatra eyes don’t looks so hot with eyeliner bleeding into crows’ feet or dark circles and bags. My favourite new piece of kit is this product by Benefit — a palette that corrects, conceals and highlights. The perfect tool to have in your handbag as the day takes its toll. It is not as thick as most under-eye concealers, with a more dewy, oily consistency, which gives a very natural look. The pink highlighter is a miracle worker.

Jo Malone Velvet Rose and Oud Cologne Intense Limited Edition (€115/100ml)

Jo Malone’s limited edition fragrances always cause a frenzy — May’s divine Plum Blossom disappeared so fast it feels like a dream. You can feed your obsession with the new Cologne Intense limited edition, the sensual Velvet Rose and Oud. You can layer it with any fragrance from this range so it’s a good way to reinvent your regular fragrance.
