Ace of base

BEST FOR BRIDES

Ace of base

Bridal beauty is some of the most fraught there is and what winds up looking good in the pictures often looks heavy in real life. Not so Lancôme’s latest. Teint Idole Ultra 24H, €35, comes in 18 shades, and re-defines the notion of longwearing foundation as something that’s necessarily thick and heavy. A fine, fluid emulsion, it wears beautifully and crucially, photographs excellently.

BEST NEW TECHNOLOGY

Yves Saint Laurent’s just-landed Le Teint Touche Éclat, €38, is a bit of a marvel. In 22 shades, it has been created without using traditional fillers and powders. That means it’s got a water-light consistency, yet it still offers coverage. Golden mother-of-pearl particles impart a glow, packaging’s posh and all-in-all, if skin is normal-to-combination, this is well worth a look.

BEST FOR SEBUM-PRONE

Want it to stay put, absorb pesky glow and do your skin some good while its at it? Take a look at Clinique’s Stay-Matte Oil-Free Makeup, €28, so. 17 shades mean one for everyone in the audience and oil-absorbing ingredients, plus mattifying components ensure shine is tamped down. Skincare inclusions even help fight the reasons your complexion is acting up in the first place.

BEST REAL SKIN EFFECT

This lovely sheer-to medium offering from Benefit is the new Oxygen Wow Hellow Flawless foundation, €35. In just nine shades, it sets to a satin finish that’s flattering and good for a normal to slightly sebum-prone skintype.

BEST BUDGET CHOICE

The sleeper hit of the year, Rimmel’s Wake Me Up Foundation, €10.95, has been praised from high-end glossies down to blogs for its sheer glow-giving properties. It applies and wears beautifully, giving a real me-but-better finish. Downside? Limited shade choice means there isn’t one for everyone in the audience.

FINISHING TOUCHES

When it comes to good foundations, here’s how to wear it well. Xtra Factor presenter Caroline Flack knows she needs little else, except a basic smokey eye and a bright lipstick, to achieve 2012’s ace face

The best brush

Stippling brushes are all over the beauty scene this year. I really like Samantha Chapman’s Real Techniques offering, €13.50. It gives a polished finish to your makeup that looks professional.

The best liner

Gel liner has come into the mainstream thanks to brands like Inglot, Maybelline and Catrice. New from L’Oréal Paris is Superliner Gel Intenza Eyeliner, €14.99, which comes in two shades along with a neat little brush.

The bright lip

Clarins Crystal Balm in Crystal Coral, €20.33, satisfies lovers of gloss, neon shades and lipbalm in one, providing a sheer slick of shiny colour that’s ideal with a perfectly finished face.

And watch out for ...

Launching in the autumn is Giorgio Armani’s amazing serum-alike Maestro Fusion Makeup. A really new-gen take on base, this one will rack up column inches: you heard it here first.
