Popular RTÉ broadcaster John Murray has become a grandfather for the first time

Popular RTÉ broadcaster John Murray has become a grandfather for the first time following the birth of his grand-daughter.

The sports broadcaster welcomed the new member to his family last Thursday when little Penny Katarina Murray was born to his son Stephen and his partner Sofia.

Scores of congratulatory tweets were made and the good news, including from Health Minister Simon Harris.

Another tweet reads: “Hurray! A million congratulations to you all. Lots of love as always.”

Currently heard on Weekend Sport, Mr Murray presented The John Murray Show on RTÉ Radio 1 - an hour-long lifestyle and entertainment programme for five years.

He was one of the presenters of Morning Ireland, Ireland's most popular radio show before going on to host his own weekly programme, The Business.
