WATCH: Hozier criticises the Catholic Church in interview with Gay Byrne

Looks like Hozier has followed in the footsteps of Stephen Fry and has given Gay Byrne a run for his money on the topic of religion.

The Bray musician appeared on The Meaning of Life with Gay Byrne this week and criticises the Catholic Church for “sticking their noses” in people’s sexuality and relationships.

“There’s no surprise that I have strong opinions about where the Church should stick its nose,” he said.

“I have strong opinions about what authority it does not have when speaking about sexuality or speaking about the relationship between two people”.

He then goes on to refer to the Catholic Church as an organisation that has a very unique position in Ireland and heavily influences the two topics (sexuality and relationships).

Then came the topic of baptism.

“I’m not cross about the idea of baptism,” he explains to the former Late Late Show host.

“I just think the idea that when a child is born and the idea that this is something that is inherently sinful and needs to be cleansed in order for it to be all good with its creator, I think that’s an absurd concept.”

Gay replies to this by suggesting his concept may be wrong: “We all have the potential within us to be bad as adults, taking on baptism is a sign you’re joining a Christian community with the intention of being good and doing good rather than bad.”

Hozier quickly fires back to this remark: “Surely you’d teach a child those concepts before cleaning him without his permission”.

He then ends the piece by saying that the Catholic doctrine inspires people to fear "being born, creating life or making love and dying" and he believes that these are the three things most important things that anyone would ever do.
