Disney announces Mary Poppins remake

Even though the sound of it sounds something quite atrocious, Disney have announced plans to remake their 1964 classic, Mary Poppins.

The new Poppins film will take place in “Depression-era London” 20 years after the original movie took place and “will draw from existing Poppins tales in the rest of author P.L Travers’ 1034-1988 children’s book series”, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The new project is decidedly not being developed as a sequel but will explore the famous nanny’s adventures with the Banks family.

In short, will there be a new script? Yes.

Will there be new songs? Yes.

The songs in the new version will be written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who won a Tony award for Hairspray.

The original film grossed $100m and won five Oscars, including the best actress prize for Julie Andrews, who played Mary Poppins herself.
