Omar Sharif has died aged 83
Omar Sharif has died in hospital in Cairo, after suffering a heart attack.
The actor, made famous with the title role in Lean's Doctor Zhivago, had been in hospital for patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease.
The Egypt-born actor won two Golden Globes and an Oscar nomination for his role as Sherif Ali in David Lean's iconic film and was rewarded with another Golden Globe for Doctor Zhivago three years later.
He was famously the first Egyptian screen legend and the only male Arab actor to have made it in Hollywood.
He was married to fellow actor Faten Hamama, who he co-starred with in the 1953 film, The Blazing Sun.
He wil be survived by his son, Omar Sharif Jr and two grandsons.
Omar has taken to Twitter to pay this respects to his father.
