US girl group singer Simone Battle, a finalist on 'The X Factor' USA in 2011, has died.

According to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office, Ms Battle, 25, was found dead in her West Hollywood home on Friday morning.

She gained notoriety through performances on the television show, and her band – G.R.L. – had been signed by mega-hit maker Dr Luke.

Coroner’s Department Lt David Smith says a post mortem will be performed on Sunday.

The death was first reported by the celebrity website TMZ.

In a written statement, Ms Battle’s record company called her “an exceptional young talent and human being”.

The brunette beauty's father Anthony E Battle confirmed that his daughter had passed away, but remained tight-lipped on the cause of death.

Mr. Battle said previously: "She will be greatly missed and loved. She was an exuberant person and a very loved person."

News that Simone, who was a finalist on 'The X Factor' USA in 2011, had died began circulating last night after music producer Derek Butler took to Instagram to pay tribute to the brunette beauty.

He wrote alongside a picture of the star: "I'm still in shock and in disbelief to have confirmed the death of my childhood friend @SimoneBattle. Her heart was pure gold and her star power limitless.

Rest in sweet peace Angel. #simonebattle #rip #grl (sic)."
