Crane smashes into art museum, people think it’s art

Last weekend, the Dallas Museum of Art, Texas, took a knock as an extendible crane toppled over, breaking off masonry - but locals thought it was an outlandish piece of "art".

The crane was being used to erect a secure tent in the plaza outside the museum ahead of the annual art ball, when the weight of the extended arm unbalanced the truck it was mounted to, bringing the arm crashing down.

"You see a work of art, it's a startling sensation," one onlooker told CBS News. "Yeah, that was my first question - I came to see a new sculpture," another said.

The crane was eventually towed away, with minimal damage to the building's exterior.

In related events, two students visiting the same museum last week took off a pair of sunglasses and a wristwatch and "created art", which museum visitors stopped to consider as an exhibition.

All of which asks the interesting question: what is art? Answers on a postcard, canvas, or through interpretive dance.
