The year was 2005 - everyone was singing along to James Blunt, a new Batman franchise was about to arrive, and everyone was super excited about cryptic, mysterious TV show Lost.

Now, ten years later, shortly after 4pm on the American date system, it will be 4-8-15, 16:23:42.

If those numbers sound familiar, it's because they're the maddening, never-quite-explained digits from the show, which changed the life of Hurley, one of the main characters, and seemed ever-present on the mysterious island - from the countdown clock of season two to "the hatch".

Much like the rest of the show's plot, hopes of having the significance explained faded as the series went on, but fans haven't forgotten the distinctive series of numbers.

Of course, in Irish and other date standards, the numbers will come around on August 4 this year, but since Lost is an American show and they don't know how dates work, today is the day most fans will enjoy the numerical coincidence.

Maybe it's time to rewatch the series - that plane crash scene was pretty spectacular …
